As the New Year approaches, many of us set ambitious goals for growth, learning, and achievement. For some, this means preparing for exams or returning to studying after a break. Whether you’re a student aiming to excel in something, a professional pursuing a qualification, or someone diving into personal development, the pressure to perform can feel overwhelming.
I know it. I’ve been there myself—juggling study schedules, writing assignments, and managing the mental load of exams. And all that, on top of running a business, juggling home and child care.
I’ve even researched this subject and wrote a dissertation on it.
This has led to me also helping countless clients who face similar challenges.
In this blog, I’ll share how hypnotherapy and evidence-based strategies can help you manage stress, boost focus, and build confidence as you prepare for success.
I’ve learnt a lot along the way, which I hope will help you and anyone studying next year.
Understanding Exam Stress: The Science Behind the Struggle
Let’s start with the basics. What is exam stress or exam anxiety?
Exam stress arises from a combination of psychological and physiological responses.
It often involves activating the fight-or-flight response, which can be triggered by fear of failure, high expectations, or uncertainty. This is the body’s way of going on alert and highlighting an actual or potential threat to the mind and body.
This fight or flight mind/body response causes symptoms such as:
- Increased heart rate
- Shallow breathing
- Tension in the body and or headaches
- Difficulty concentrating
- Digestive issues, such as IBS or getting butterflies in your stomach before an exam
Research has shown that chronic stress can impair cognitive functions such as memory, attention, and decision-making—key skills needed for exam preparation.
But there is so much more to exams than passing them. There is the impact on relationships, discovering your abilities and passions in life, feeling a sense of achievement, and problem-solving skills.
Let’s talk about this more.
How Hypnotherapy Can Help, Backed by Research
Hypnotherapy is a complementary therapy that works by guiding individuals into a deeply relaxed, focused state. In this state, the subconscious mind becomes more receptive to positive suggestions, helping to reframe unhelpful thought patterns.
Here’s what the research says about its benefits for studying and exams:
Reducing Anxiety: Studies, such as those published in a Meta-analysis by Valentine et al. (2019) in the International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis, have demonstrated that hypnosis can significantly reduce anxiety levels.
Other studies, such as Pachaiappan et al. (2023), with a pretest/ posttest design, showed that self-hypnosis helped test anxiety for school children. Papchaiappan et al. (2023) also carried out a systematic review and found that after searching five databases, hypnosis does help decrease test anxiety.
This means that hypnosis aims to create a calmer mindset and reduce overthinking.
Improving Focus and Concentration: Hypnosis has been shown to enhance attention and concentration by reducing distractions and promoting a state of mental clarity.
Boosting Confidence: Research indicates that hypnosis can help increase self-efficacy, which is the belief in one’s ability to succeed. Positive affirmations and visualisations used in hypnotherapy reinforce this mindset. I always include positive suggestions to boost confidence when helping people with exam anxiety, as confidence levels are often low.
Enhancing Memory Retention: Although limited, some studies suggest hypnosis can improve memory recall by reducing interference from stress or anxiety. However, this is most effective when combined with active study techniques. I often use Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) with hypnotherapy because I believe that the person gets a conscious and subconscious way of changing the problem. Furthermore, there is research evidence from research by Ramondo et al. (2021) that this integration can make a difference.
Promoting Relaxation and Better Sleep: Hypnosis for sleep (also known as hypnotherapy for insomnia) has shown efficacy in improving sleep quality, which is crucial for cognitive function and memory consolidation.
Real examples (You could call it Hypnotherapy in Action)
I call this section hypnotherapy in action because nothing changes until you take action.
The action could be acknowledging the problem, looking for solutions, changing thoughts and/or behaviours and changing attitudes.
Let’s face it: the last thing you want is to end up in a dead-end job.
I want to highlight that the effectiveness of hypnotherapy isn’t just theoretical—real-life outcomes back it.
Here are examples from clients who benefited from hypnotherapy. By the way, I am talking generally as I respect client confidentiality and will not provide any specific information about individuals without their consent.
Let’s call the first person Emma: Emma felt overwhelmed and lacked confidence.
Emma, a university student, struggled with paralysing exam anxiety.
She was also anxious about other things. She had recently finished with her boyfriend and felt that she wasn’t good enough.
Our sessions started with her telling me how she felt and what made her realise that something had to change. She knew what she wanted: to pass her exams and get on with her life.
Through hypnotherapy in my office and later self-hypnosis, she practised guided relaxation techniques and visualised exam success. I also helped her reframe her negative thoughts and feelings about herself. I also worked on positive suggestions to help her boost her confidence.
These sessions helped her remain calm and focused, improving her exam performance.
Now, I will talk about another client. I’ll call him James.
James had a problem that I see over and over again. He was suffering from procrastination, a condition that prevents people from starting and completing tasks.
Procrastination is often linked to stress and anxiety. It’s not about being lazy and not wanting to complete tasks.
James, a professional taking an accountancy exam, felt stuck in a cycle of procrastination.
I gave James four one-hour sessions of hypnotherapy and little tasks between sessions. Hypnotherapy helped him uncover his fear of failure and provided him with tools to set realistic goals. James could then study, find time to relax and go out with his friends.
Evidence-Based Strategies to Combine with Hypnotherapy
To maximise the benefits of hypnotherapy, I have found that it is essential to integrate these proven techniques into your study routine:
Adopt Active Learning Techniques: Techniques like self-testing and teaching others greatly improve memory retention compared to passive reading or highlighting.
Use Spaced Repetition. I found this to be a great way to remember things. Cognitive psychology research supports the idea that revisiting material at increasing intervals strengthens long-term retention.
Writing down a mind map of everything I had learnt previously helped me before moving on to the next subject.
Practice Mindfulness Meditation or self-hypnosis. Studies show that mindfulness and focusing on what you want improve focus and reduce stress. Even five minutes a day can make a significant difference.
Visualise Success: Guided imagery, a technique used in hypnotherapy, has been shown to enhance performance in exams, sports, and other high-pressure scenarios.
I like to visualise the positive things I want before I go to bed. So, with exams, I would think about the certificate at the end and that feeling of passing after all the hard work I had put in.
Prioritise Rest and Recovery: This is not easy if you are a busy person like me and have a strong work ethic.
However, you must find balance in life. Research confirms that sleep is critical for memory consolidation and cognitive function. Aim for consistent, quality sleep throughout your preparation.
Addressing Common Concerns with Hypnotherapy
Any concerns or scepticism you may have about hypnotherapy doesn’t surprise me. I was sceptical once. But to decide on something, you need to be fully informed.
There are many myths surrounding hypnotherapy, and movies and stage shows give the impression that it’s evil or a process just for fun and entertainment.
Hypnotherapy is different because its intention is to help people, and there is evidence that it works. It’s a safe, non-invasive option for exam preparation.
Nevertheless, hypnotherapy isn’t a substitute for effective study techniques. Instead, it complements your efforts by reducing barriers such as anxiety, procrastination, and lack of confidence.
How to Start with Hypnotherapy
At Awaken the Change, I offer personalised hypnotherapy sessions that are designed to help you achieve your goals. Here’s how we’ll work together:
Initial Consultation: I offer everyone a free initial consultation. People might also call this a discovery call. It’s a time when you can briefly tell me the problem, and I can suggest a way forward using hypnotherapy, counselling, or coaching.
Although everyone is different, I explain how many sessions are likely, so I can’t be exact. I provide lots of information on my website, including prices, but if you need more information about any practicalities, I am happy to give it.
You may also want to know more about hypnosis. You can ask me questions, and we’ll discuss your challenges and what you hope to achieve. You can then decide to think about it or go ahead and book.
All clients are asked to complete an online registration form with the agreement and make a payment before the first session.
Tailored Sessions: Each session will be customised to address your unique needs, whether it’s reducing anxiety, boosting confidence, or improving focus. You may also have other worries about the exams that you want to change.
Practical Strategies: During the sessions, I’ll provide practical tips and techniques to support your exam preparation, along with hypnosis.
As discussed, I’ve been through many tests, assignments, and exams, and I want to tell you what I found most helpful. I can also cover giving presentations if that is linked to your assessments.
