Help with Fear of Flying
Is the fear of flying stopping you from having holidays abroad
or going away on business trips?
What’s Behind the Fear of Flying?
Fear of flying is about a fear of being in an aeroplane or helicopter and is called aerophobia or aviophobia. It causes a person to feel extremely anxious and will often prevent someone from travelling.
Yet there is lots of evidence to prove that flying is one of the most common and safe ways to travel. However, all the efforts to convince someone of the safety facts and figures will still not be enough to get that person to enjoy flying.
Fear of flying is irrational. And as the fear gets worse it becomes a phobia. One part of you says you should be able to fly safely and the other part says no I can’t do it.
The anxiety produced by this fear is the same as other anxieties because the body is in a situation of ‘fight or flight’. The body is responding to a perceived threat, but the perception has got magnified and out of control resulting in changes in the body.
Is This You?
Do you force yourself to fly simply because your family, friends or work demands it of you? Maybe you have avoided flying or can only fly when you take medication.
If you are scared of flying you may experience sweating, trembling, a rapid heartbeat, nausea, wanting to cry or negative thoughts about running away. Severe anxiety leads to panic attacks.
It doesn’t have to be this way – Linda can help.
