Hi, I’m Linda, a qualified hypnotherapist and counsellor who has helped hundreds of people over the years with bruxism.

Let me tell you more about bruxism.

What most people don’t realise is that bruxism can be more than just a nightly inconvenience; it can be a sign of underlying anxiety, fears, or phobias. Fortunately, hypnotherapy and counselling can help you discover effective relief from the pain and emotional turmoil associated with teeth grinding.

Understanding Bruxism

Bruxism is a condition characterised by the involuntary grinding or clenching of teeth, often during REM sleep. However, some people can also experience teeth grinding during the day especially if they are feeling stressed and anxious. Some medications may contribute to the condition and sleep disorders. Secondary bruxism can be caused by some medical conditions such as sleep apnoea, stroke, Parkinson’s Disease, ADHD or dementia. This is why it is important to visit your doctor or dentist if you suspect that you have bruxism.

While occasional teeth grinding is normal, chronic bruxism can lead to severe consequences, such as tooth damage, jaw pain, and even facial muscle soreness. If left untreated, it can significantly impact your overall well-being.

Children and adults can experience teeth-grinding, but children often grow out of it.

Dentists are usually the first to diagnose bruxism as they can observe the wearing down of teeth. Often, they will prescribe teeth guards however these need to be replaced regularly as the wearer will also grind the guard down!

Other treatments include Botox injections to weaken the jaw muscles, exercises, and some complementary therapies including hypnotherapy.

The Link Between Bruxism and Anxiety

Many adults are unaware of the connection between bruxism and anxiety. It’s essential to recognise that bruxism often serves as an indicator of underlying emotional issues. Anxiety, anger, fears, and phobias are common triggers for teeth grinding. Individuals who experience stress and anxiety in their daily lives may unconsciously channel their tension into grinding their teeth at night.

So, if you have a stressful life, start to get a work-life balance, eat a healthy diet, exercise and get enough sleep.

The Pain of Teeth Grinding

Teeth grinding doesn’t just cause emotional distress; it can also lead to physical discomfort. The constant grinding exerts immense pressure on your teeth, which can result in tooth sensitivity, enamel erosion, and even chipped or cracked teeth. Additionally, the strain on your jaw muscles can lead to chronic jaw pain, headaches, and neck pain. These physical symptoms can significantly diminish your quality of life.

Hypnotherapy and Counselling: A Holistic Approach

If you’re struggling with teeth grinding and its associated pain, hypnotherapy and counselling can offer a holistic solution. Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic technique that uses relaxation and guided imagery to address subconscious issues and promote positive behavioural changes. Counselling, on the other hand, provides a safe space to explore and work through the root causes of anxiety, fears, and phobias.

Hypnotherapy and Counselling for Teeth-Grinding Relief

I combine hypnotherapy and counselling as I get better results.

Hypnotherapy for bruxism involves focusing the mind to accept positive suggestions. Through relaxation techniques, guided imagery, and reframing, I can help you identify and address the emotional stressors that contribute to your teeth-grinding habit.

Counselling is an essential component of a comprehensive approach to bruxism treatment. By working with me, you can explore your anxieties, fears, and phobias in a supportive and non-judgmental environment.

I specialise in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), so I can help you explore your thoughts, behaviours and emotions. Counselling helps you develop coping strategies, gain insight into your emotional triggers, and learn healthier ways to manage stress.

As your anxiety diminishes, so too will the frequency and intensity of your teeth-grinding.
