Hypnotherapy FAQs by Linda

If you’re considering hypnotherapy, it’s natural to have questions before you begin. You may wonder what it involves, how it works, and whether it’s right for you. In this section I’ve gathered the most common questions people ask me about hypnotherapy, along with straightforward answers. My aim is to give you clear, honest information so you can feel confident and well-informed before deciding if hypnotherapy with me, Linda Witchell at Awaken the Change, is the right step for you.

What is hypnotherapy and how does it work?

Hypnotherapy is a safe, evidence-based therapy that uses hypnosis to help people make positive changes in their thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. During a session, you are often relaxed (although you don’t need to be fully relaxed to enjoy hypnosis), and focused while I guide you with suggestions that support your goals, such as reducing anxiety, stopping smoking, or improving sleep.

Is hypnotherapy safe for everyone?

Yes, hypnotherapy is generally safe for most people when carried out by a qualified professional. It is a natural state of relaxation and focused attention. I have extensive training, and I am an experienced hypnotherapist, so I aim to provide a high standard of care. However, hypnotherapy may not be suitable for people with certain psychiatric conditions, so it’s always best to check with your doctor or therapist before starting.

Can anyone be hypnotised?

Most people can be hypnotised if they are willing and able to follow simple instructions. Hypnosis is not about losing control, rather, it’s about working together on agreed outcomes. Some people may find it easier to relax into hypnosis than others, but with practice, almost everyone can benefit.

What happens in a hypnotherapy session?

Everyone is offered a free chat first to understand the problem. After that in a typical first session, we will continue to explore the problem that you want to change and your goals. I make further assessments by asking you questions. Then you’ll be guided into a relaxed state using words, imagery, and techniques designed to focus your mind. While in hypnosis, you’ll hear positive suggestions or therapeutic interventions to help you make lasting changes. You do not go to sleep or become unconscious.

How many hypnotherapy sessions will I need?

The number of sessions depends on your personal goals and the issue you want to work on. Some people notice changes after just one session, while others benefit from several sessions. For example, stopping smoking might take one or two sessions, while managing anxiety may take a little longer. In my practice, typically four or five sessions helps most people.

What problems can hypnotherapy help with?

Hypnotherapy can support many issues including anxiety, stress, phobias, smoking, weight management, confidence, exam nerves, insomnia, and grief. It’s also used for medical issues such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and pain management. I also specialise in helping people learn a second language. Hypnosis can help with many things so just ask if you are not sure if hypnosis can help you. At Awaken the Change, I tailor sessions to your individual needs.

What is the difference between hypnosis and hypnotherapy?

Hypnosis is the natural state of focused attention and relaxation. Hypnotherapy is the therapeutic use of hypnosis by a trained professional to bring about change. As a qualified counsellor I also use Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) with hypnosis. In other words, hypnosis is the tool, and hypnotherapy is the treatment.

Does hypnotherapy really work?

Yes, hypnotherapy has been shown in research to be effective for many conditions such as stopping smoking, reducing anxiety, managing IBS, and overcoming phobias. Like all therapies, results vary from person to person, but many people find hypnotherapy highly effective when they are motivated and open to change.

Can hypnotherapy help with anxiety and stress?

Absolutely. Hypnotherapy is well known for helping people relax and reduce anxiety. It works by calming the mind, changing unhelpful thought patterns, and teaching you techniques to feel more in control. Many clients notice improvements in their stress levels after just a few sessions.

Does hypnotherapy work for insomnia and sleep problems?

Yes, hypnotherapy can be very helpful for sleep issues. By reducing anxiety, quietening racing thoughts, and teaching relaxation techniques, hypnotherapy makes it easier to fall asleep and stay asleep. And at Awaken the Change, I provide tips and strategies that you might not be aware of to help you prepare for sleep. Many clients report deeper, more restful sleep after treatment.

Can hypnotherapy help me stop smoking or vaping?

Yes, hypnotherapy is one of the most effective methods for stopping smoking or vaping. It helps by changing the way your mind thinks about cigarettes or e-cigarettes, removing cravings, and increasing your motivation to quit for good. Many people become smoke-free after just one or two powerful sessions. As a retired nurse I can also discuss health risks related to smoking that you may not know to help you make an informed choice to quit.

Is hypnotherapy effective for weight loss?

Hypnotherapy can support healthy weight loss by helping you change habits, reduce emotional eating, and boost motivation for exercise and lifestyle changes. It works by addressing the root causes of overeating rather than focusing on diets alone. Weight loss requires you to make changes to your eating and lifestyle. I always advise people to get a health check if they are very overweight to check that ther are no other health problems.

Can hypnotherapy help with exam stress and performance anxiety?

Yes, hypnotherapy is excellent for exam stress, public speaking nerves, and performance anxiety. It teaches you how to stay calm under pressure, focus better, and feel more confident in challenging situations. Many students and professionals find it improves both their performance and their wellbeing.

Does hypnotherapy help with grief ?

Hypnotherapy can be a gentle way to support people coping with grief. It can reduce overwhelming feelings, improve sleep, and help you find calm moments while adjusting to your loss. It doesn’t take away grief but can make it easier to cope. During hypnotherapy you get time for you and an expert who understands grief.

I’m interested in hypnotherapy for pet loss, do you offer this online?

Yes. Pet grief is also difficult for some people so I can offer hypnotherapy to help you relax and feel calmer after pet loss.

Can hypnotherapy help with IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)?

Yes. The NHS recognises gut-directed hypnotherapy as an effective treatment for IBS. Hypnotherapy works by calming the gut-brain connection, reducing symptoms such as pain, bloating, and constipation, diarrhoea, and improving quality of life.

Is online hypnotherapy as effective as face-to-face sessions?

Yes, online hypnotherapy via Zoom is just as effective as seeing a therapist in person. Many clients prefer it because it’s convenient, comfortable, and accessible from anywhere in the world.

How much does hypnotherapy cost in the UK?

The cost of hypnotherapy varies depending on the therapist and the service offered. At Awaken the Change, I offer a free initial consultation so you can decide if hypnotherapy is right for you before committing to paid sessions. All my fees are clearly displayed on my website.

What qualifications should a hypnotherapist have?

A qualified hypnotherapist should have accredited training, professional membership, and be registered with recognised bodies such as the General Hypnotherapy Register or CNHC. I am a Fellow of the National Hypnotherapy Society and also a qualified counsellor, coach, and nurse with master’s degrees in hypnosis and psychology.

Can hypnotherapy replace medication or medical treatment?

No. Hypnotherapy is a complementary therapy that can work alongside medical treatment but should not replace advice or care from your doctor. Always consult your healthcare professional before changing medication or treatment plans.

What scientific evidence is there that hypnotherapy works?

There is growing research showing hypnotherapy helps with conditions such as stopping smoking, IBS, pain management, anxiety, and insomnia. Clinical trials and NHS guidance highlight its value as a safe and effective therapy for many people.

Do you offer past life regression?

No. I choose to offer more research and evidenced based hypnotherapy.

Do you offer hypnotherapy for children?

Yes. Sometimes I help teenagers or younger children but most of my clients are adults.

Can hypnosis help me learn to relax?

Yes. I can guide you to a state of relaxation and I can teach you self hypnosis so you can practice it at home.

When can I get an appointment for hypnotherapy?

At Awaken the Change, I work full-time and only keep clients for a short time,  so appointments come up regularly. Appointments are available from 8 am till 8 pm Monday to Friday and Saturday mornings, if you book online service via Zoom. Fewer appointments are in my office. Ask if you require an appointment, face-to-face in Bournemouth with me.
