Counselling is a safe, confidential space to talk about your thoughts, feelings, and challenges with a trained professional. It works by helping you explore difficulties, understand yourself better, and find new ways to cope.

What issues can counselling help with?

Counselling can help with anxiety, stress, depression, grief, bereavement, pet loss, relationship problems, low confidence, and life changes. It supports your emotional wellbeing and helps you develop healthier coping strategies.

How do I know if I need counselling?

If you are struggling with emotions, relationships, or life stresses that feel overwhelming, counselling may be right for you. It can provide support when talking to friends or family isn’t enough.

What is the difference between counselling and psychotherapy?

There are differing opinions on this but counselling usually focuses on specific problems or short-term issues, while psychotherapy can explore deeper patterns and long-term difficulties. Both aim to improve mental health and wellbeing.

Is counselling confidential?

Yes, counselling is private and confidential. The only exceptions are where there are concerns about serious harm to you or others, or if there is a duty to report serious crimes like terrorism which I can explain at the start.

How long does counselling take to work?

Some people feel better after a few sessions, while others may need longer-term support. The length of counselling depends on your goals and the issues you are working on. With many clients that I see six to twelve sessions is common, although sometimes people just need one session and they feel better.

What happens in a counselling session?

In a session, you talk about what’s on your mind in a supportive and non-judgemental space. Your counsellor will listen, explore your thoughts and feelings, and help you find ways forward.

Can counselling help with grief and bereavement?

Yes, online counselling via Zoom is just as effective as in-person therapy. It is flexible, convenient, and accessible wherever you are.

Can I have a free consultation before starting counselling?

Yes, I offer a free initial consultation so you can ask questions and see if counselling with me feels like a good fit.

How often will I need counselling sessions?

Most people start with weekly sessions, but this can be flexible depending on your needs. We will review progress together and adjust as needed. People usually book a block of either three or six sessions depending on the issues. This is at a reduced rate. However, you can still book and pay for one session at a time if you want.

What qualifications should a counsellor have?

A counsellor should have professional training and be registered with a recognised body. Look for memberships such as the National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society or BACP.

Are you a registered counsellor in the UK?

Yes, I am a qualified and registered counsellor, hypnotherapist, and coach with professional memberships. I also have master’s level training in psychology and health.

Can I stop counselling at any time?

Yes, counselling is voluntary, and you can stop whenever you feel ready. It’s best to discuss this with your counsellor so sessions can be brought to a helpful close.

What type of counselling do you provide at Awaken the Change?

I provide person-centred counselling tailored to each client’s needs. I also integrate other approaches, and coaching, when appropriate.

What counselling approaches do you use?

I use evidence-based approaches including person-centred counselling, CBT techniques, EMDR, psychodynamic counselling and coaching methods. This flexible style ensures the support is right for you.

Can counselling replace medication or medical treatment?

No, counselling does not replace medical care but can work alongside it. Always follow your doctor’s advice before changing or stopping medication.

Is counselling suitable for children or teenagers?

Counselling can help young people, but I specialise in working with adults. I do help some teenagers. If a young child needs support, I can signpost to appropriate services.

Can I talk about anything in counselling?

Yes, counselling is your space to talk about anything that matters to you. There are no right or wrong topics. However, I am not a specialist in all areas, so there may be some problems that are better dealt with by another counsellor. For example, I do not offer help with sexual problems.
