What is Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)?
This is a method of working with you to help you to find a way to get your life in balance so you can feel better and make changes that you want to make. Its a type of energy psychology. This involves you or me tapping on specific points on your body. Many people describe it as a form of accupuncture without needles.
Gary Craig who followed the work of Dr Roger Callaghan in the 1990s developed EFT. Just like acupuncture it is believed that the energy lines or meridians in the body have become blocked. The theory is that the cause of all negative emotion is a disruption in the body’s energy system.
Many people find this to be a very effective way to heal themselves. It often requires just one or two sessions using psychotherapy techniques. EFT can be combined in the consultation with hypnotherapy or it can be done on its own. I can also teach clients how to do EFT on themselves even over the telephone.
What happens during an EFT session?
As with hypnotherapy or counselling I will need to ask you questions about your general health and medications. I do not make any diagnosis rather I ask you about the problem that you want help with as I would like you to be as specific as you can be. For example you may wish to feel happier, but this desire may be more about removing other specific feelings like guilt about a past event or fear about making some changes in your life.
I explain exactly what I am going to do before I begin. I ask for your permission to tap on your head, face and body or you can tap on yourself.
When EFT starts you are fully awake and in control. Either you tap on yourself or I tap gently on your head, face and a couple of points of your clothed body while I talk to you about the issue that you want to change. I ask you to repeat words and phrases during the tapping. Sometimes I ask you if you can imagine things such as colours as you or I tap.
What can EFT help with?
EFT has been used to help people to change emotional and physical problems.
Are there any side effects?
Occasionally people release negative thoughts and feelings or feel a bit light- headed for a few minutes after tapping. Some people report a feeling of being energised after the session. You are in control so you can stop tapping at anytime if you want to.
Please note, whilst EFT can produce some quite remarkable results, you must ultimately take responsibility for your own health and well being. As with all complementary therapies you should not stop taking prescribed medication without discussing this with your doctor first.
